PDF.co Review: A PDF Toolkit API, Not a Scored OCR Product

PDF.co is a hosted REST API for PDF automation — convert, edit, merge, split, OCR, barcodes, a template document parser, and a separate AI invoice parser — sold in monthly credits, not as a scored OCR engine. OCRRank does not publish an accuracy number for it. If the job is managed parsing across many layouts, the site default stays DocuPipe on the hub. This page’s only Visit button is PDF.co, for the toolkit fit. If you are still sorting “OCR” from “get me these fields,” read OCR vs document parsing first.

To keep OCRRank a free resource, we receive advertising and referral fees when you sign up for a tool through outbound links on this page. This impacts the prominence and order in which a tool appears, but not its score. Our editorial research is what determines the ranking. See How We Make Money and our Advertiser Disclosure.

This is a fit review. It does not re-rank the hub.

What PDF.co is

PDF.co’s product index groups the API into extract, create and edit, convert, and manage. Named on pdf.co and pdf.co/products: AI invoice parsing, PDF-to-other and other-to-PDF, a document parser, a classifier, editing, forms, merge, split, HTML-to-PDF, email-to-PDF, compress, barcodes, and security. The products FAQ describes a hosted REST API, OCR for scanned or image PDFs, and no-code paths through Zapier, Make, and n8n. That is one API family plus automation glue, not a single-purpose parser.

The homepage says the product is trusted by 50,000+ users and markets a Zapier plugin across over 7,000 apps. Both are vendor claims, not OCRRank findings. The document parser page separately says “over 300” automation platforms. Those figures are not the same claim; this review does not merge them. That page also lists sample stacks — Python, C#, C++, Java, JavaScript, cURL, and PHP — which matters if you already live in an HTTP client, and does not make this an accuracy test.

The products FAQ says files are automatically deleted after processing and defers retention windows to a security overview. No retention period was on the pages fetched 4 Oct 2026, so none is stated here. A self-hosted or on-prem edition was not confirmed on those pages either.

What this review will not score

OCRRank has no benchmark, no test corpus, no star score, and no rank number for PDF.co. There is no accuracy percentage here because we did not measure one and will not borrow one.

Scored roundups sometimes flatten this vendor into “cheap OCR” or a single price per call. Those writeups are not this site’s verdict. This review does not repeat third-party scores, rank positions, per-call prices, or claimed private corpora. A directory rating, if you see one, is that directory’s number on the day you check it.

A trial is advertised. The pricing-page fetch did not state days or credits, and outside pages disagree, so confirm both at signup. This is not a permanent free plan. None was established on the pricing page fetched 4 Oct 2026.

Pricing and credits

Prices below are the annual cards on pdf.co/pricing as fetched 4 Oct 2026. Each dollar figure in the first price column is per month, billed annually. The strikethrough amount is the list annual total the page showed; the second amount is the charged annual total. OCRRank is not quoting a month-to-month price and is not converting any plan into a single price per page or per call.

On that fetch, Basic through Business 2 shared Full API Access, Unlimited Output, Secured Data, and Advanced Security. Business 3’s card listed Unlimited Output and Secured Data. The other bullets are not pasted onto Business 3.

A PDF.co comparison page labeled “Pricing verified July 2026” still discusses month-to-month rates for the same plan names. That page is older than the 4 Oct 2026 pricing render, which did not show those monthly rates, so they are not reprinted: pdffiller pricing plans comparison.

What a credit is

Credits are endpoint-specific. They are not pages, and they are not one credit per API call. From credits per API function, fetched 4 Oct 2026, these per-page costs change a buying decision:

  • AI invoice parser, /v1/ai-invoice-parser: 100 credits per page.
  • Document parser template, /v1/pdf/documentparser: 42 credits per page.
  • Make searchable (OCR), /v1/pdf/makesearchable: 35 credits per page.
  • AI PDF-to-JSON, /v1/pdf/convert/to/json2: 28 credits per page.
  • Merge, /v1/pdf/merge: 2 credits per page.

Uploads and /v1/job/check can add per-call credits, and async calls can differ from the sync estimates. One example is enough: a one-page AI invoice parse is 100 credits, so Basic’s 16,500 credits are not 16,500 pages. Upload and job-check credits can reduce that further. The same balance goes much further on merge. Use the credit calculator on the pricing page for the endpoints you will actually call. This review does not publish a full endpoint catalog or a single dollar price per call.

Parsing inside the toolkit

Parsing is available. The two parse paths are not the same price, and neither is the whole product.

Document Parser is template-based

The document parser product page describes a visual template editor, CSV, XML, or JSON output, OCR for scans, and a classifier that picks a template. The API overview says the built-in General Invoice Template is English only. With templateId 1 it covers invoice id, date, total, tax, and line items (documentparser overview). That is a shortcut for English invoices that match the built-in template. It is not “any layout, no setup.”

AI invoice parser is a separate endpoint

Vendor marketing says the AI invoice parser does not need a template for invoices. It is a different endpoint, and the more expensive credit path above: 100 credits per page versus 42 for the template document parser. Do not assume the cheaper plan was sized for the AI path.

This review does not promise field accuracy on either endpoint. For the invoice job itself, use invoice data extraction. DocuPipe remains the production default on that guide. This page does not add a second button.

Who it’s for, and who it’s not

For: teams that need several PDF operations behind one API key or a Zapier, Make, or n8n step — merge, split, convert, HTML-to-PDF, forms, barcodes, light OCR — and developers who will read a credit table before they pick a plan.

Not for: buyers who need a measured accuracy SLA. Not for teams whose only job is schema extraction across messy, multi-layout documents: contracts, statement cleanup, or table-to-Excel as the product. Not for a desktop PDF editor or a per-seat e-sign suite.

If the documents are bank or card statements, this page has no statement benchmark. Start at bank statement PDF to Excel.

Qualitative pros and cons

No scores.

Pros, from pages fetched 4 Oct 2026. One API family covers convert, edit, and generate as well as parse. Zapier is marketed on the homepage; Make and n8n are named on the products page. A template document parser and an AI invoice parser both exist, at different credit costs. Link expiry and per-endpoint credits are published, so capacity is estimable if you price the calls you will make.

Cons, from the product shape. Credits vary widely by endpoint, so a large “credits per month” number is easy to misread — Basic’s 16,500 is the example above. The template parser still needs a template, and the built-in invoice template is English only. Output links on Basic, Personal, and Business 1 expire in 60 minutes; Business 2 and Business 3 show 1,440 minutes. OCR here is a feature inside a PDF suite, not a reason to skip a managed parser when the job is field accuracy across layouts. This review does not grade support or documentation.

How it compares to a managed document parser

PDF.co wins the toolkit job: many PDF operations, automation glue, and template or AI-invoice extract as one endpoint among many.

A managed document parser wins the production extract job: a schema across layouts, review, and multi-document intake. On the rest of OCRRank, that default is DocuPipe. The ranking lives on the hub. This page does not re-rank that hub and does not add a button for DocuPipe or any other parser.

Related jobs, not a bake-off: PDF to JSON, Tesseract vs a document parsing API, extract tables from PDF to Excel, and contract data extraction. Contracts are not this toolkit’s reason to buy.

FAQ

Is PDF.co an OCR API?

It includes OCR. Make-searchable is one endpoint, 35 credits per page on the vendor credit table fetched 4 Oct 2026. OCR sits next to merge, convert, forms, barcodes, and two parsers. Calling the whole product “an OCR API” hides the credit model.

How much does PDF.co cost?

On https://pdf.co/pricing as checked 4 Oct 2026, annual plans were Basic $8.99 per month (16,500 credits; $107.89 billed annually), Personal $22.49 (37,000; $269.89), Business 1 $44.99 (80,500; $539.89), Business 2 $89.99 (159,850; $1,079.89), and Business 3 $270.00 (483,000; $3,239.98). Enterprise was Let's Talk. Those monthly figures are the billed-annually rates. Credits are not pages.

Does the Basic plan include 16,500 pages?

No. Basic includes 16,500 credits per month on that fetch. A one-page AI invoice parse is 100 credits, so that balance is not 16,500 pages, and upload or job-check credits can consume more of it. A template document parse is 42 credits per page. A merge is 2.

Does PDF.co parse invoices without a template?

The AI invoice parser is marketed as not needing a template, at 100 credits per page. The document parser is template-based. Its built-in General Invoice Template is English only (templateId 1) and covers invoice id, date, total, tax, and line items. Neither path has an OCRRank accuracy figure.

PDF.co vs a document parsing API?

Use PDF.co when you need many PDF operations and you will manage credits. Use a managed document parser when the job is reliable fields across layouts, with review. OCRRank’s production default for that second job is DocuPipe, via the hub, not via a button on this page.

Is there an OCRRank accuracy score for PDF.co?

No.

Closing

Buy PDF.co if you want a credit-metered PDF toolkit and you will price the endpoint you actually call. Merge at 2 credits per page is a different plan from AI invoice parsing at 100. Do not buy it because a roundup turned it into a cheap OCR score. For managed multi-document parsing, start at the hub.
